Every weed follows the same core cycle: a seed or root piece germinates, sends up a shoot and roots at the same time, races to photosynthesize, then flowers and seeds quickly. A weed is simply a plant that does this cycle faster and in worse conditions than the plants you chose to grow.

Weed seeds arrive constantly from outside your yard, restocking the seed bank you already have. They travel on wind, animals, water, and human gear. A single square foot of bare soil is a landing pad, and most arrivals go unnoticed because the seeds are tiny.

The main arrival routes:

  • Wind. Dandelion, thistle, and horseweed seeds carry lightweight parachutes and can drift hundreds of feet, sometimes miles.

  • Water. Rain runoff and irrigation float seeds from higher ground, sidewalks, and neighboring lots into beds and low spots.
  • Contaminated inputs. Bagged topsoil, cheap mulch, straw, and unfinished compost often carry live weed seed. Compost that never reached about 140°F does not kill it.
  • Shoes, tires, and tools. Mud on boots, mowers, and tillers moves seed from yard to yard.

Cultivated ornamentals and vegetables are bred for fruit, bloom, or flavor, so they spend energy differently and lose the race for open ground.

How weeds spread once they appear

Weeds spread two ways at once: by seed and by vegetative growth from roots and stems. The vegetative half is why weeds return after you pull them. Underground and creeping structures survive when the visible top comes off, and each surviving fragment can become a new plant.

The vegetative routes to know:

  • Rhizomes (underground horizontal stems): quackgrass and Bermuda grass send out rhizomes that resprout from every node.
  • Stolons (above-ground runners): creeping Charlie and white clover root wherever a runner touches soil.

How weeds grow through concrete, asphalt, and paving cracks

Weeds do not drill through solid concrete. They find existing gaps. A seed lodges in a crack, expansion joint, or edge where dust and moisture collect, germinates in that damp seam, then uses root pressure to widen the opening as it grows. The pavement was already cracked or jointed; the weed exploited it.

Two mechanisms combine. First, growing roots and stems generate steady turgor (water) pressure inside their cells, enough to push soil aside and widen a hairline gap over weeks. Second, cracks trap exactly what a weed needs: windblown grit for a foothold, plus rainwater that lingers longer in a shaded seam than on open slab. Tough colonizers like purslane, spotted spurge, and crabgrass specialize in these hot, dry, low-competition strips.

What conditions make weeds start growing

Weeds start growing when temperature, moisture, light, and soil disturbance line up. Their dormant seeds read these cues as a signal that a gap in the canopy has opened. Remove one cue and germination often stalls, which is the basis of most non-chemical weed control.
